On graduating from University College Galway, Damien Tansey worked in the Department of Justice for over two years. He left the Department to take up a position as Law lecturer in the third-level sector in Galway, Letterkenny and Sligo. In 1980, while working in the world of academia, he qualified as a Solicitor and set up his own practice, Damien Tansey & Associates, in Sligo.
From early on in his career, Damien established a reputation for being a tough and courageous litigator. Over the years, he has been involved in many landmark Court decisions, particularly at High Court and Supreme Court levels. He has also represented clients in Tribunals of Inquiry and at the Coroner’s Court. Successful outcomes have been reached via the Courts, through Mediation, and through all other forms of Dispute Resolution. During the course of his career to date he has worked almost exclusively for plaintiffs, and very often the Defendants were the State itself or State Agencies, and included Local Authorities, An Bord Pleanála, the Health Service Executive (HSE), and so on.
Damien has excelled in the extremely complex and emotionally charged area of medical negligence litigation / medical malpractice litigation*. Damien has been involved in some of the largest compensation awards* granted by the High Court in favour of the victims of medical misadventure. His reputation in this area is evident from the fact that he attracts work from all over Ireland and Northern Ireland, and often clients are referred to him by other law firms. He has experience of medical litigation of all types, in particular cases involving birth injury, cerebral palsy, brain injury, orthopaedic/surgical and delays in diagnosis.
In view of his acknowledged expertise in litigation generally, and particularly in the fields of medical negligence*, professional negligence and personal injury litigation*, Damien is increasingly being engaged by other law firms to act as an Expert Witness.
Damien has served on boards of directors for many years. He sits on the board of Sligo based registered charity The Model Arts and Niland Gallery in a voluntary capacity.
Damien is a notary public, a commissioner for oaths and has been admitted as a solicitor in Northern Ireland, as well as in Ireland. Damien is a member of the litigation committee of the Law Society of Ireland and of the Medical Injuries Alliance.
