Damien Tansey Solicitors LLP is a market leader in the fields of defamation law (including libel and slander, as they were formerly known), malicious falsehoods and all other cases involving damages to reputations, or breaches of privacy law.

Our Solicitors have successfully acted in many high-profile cases in this area, typically against newspapers but also against financial institutions. As appropriate, we secure retractions, public apologies and compensation for the damage done to personal, professional or business reputations.

What is defamation?

A defamatory statement is one which tends to injure a person’s reputation in the eyes of reasonable members of society.

Can you sue someone for defamation on social media such as Twitter?

The internet and social media (including internet blogs, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Google, etc) have increased opportunities for spreading untruths about individuals’ and companies’ reputations – we are nonetheless uncompromising in seeking to protect the reputations of those who may be defamed, or otherwise may have their rights breached, through these channels.

A recent defamation case that demonstrates our winning approach

Our Senior Partner, Damien Tansey SC, recently took a High Court defamation action on behalf of the Irish lawyers’ profession at large. He succeeded against a Mr John Gill and others and was successful in shutting down the Rate-Your-Solicitor.com website.
